Koh Lanta Archipelago

 

 

Koh Lanta archipelago covered the area over 180 square kilometers with totally 52 islands. Here was declared as National Park No.62 of Thailand in 1990 in an effort to protect the fragile coastal environment.

This archipelago contains four small groups of island; mainly are Koh Ngai (Hai) island group, Koh Rok group, Koh Ha group and Koh Lanta group. Generally, the island comprised of the high limestone cliff and Rainforest Mountain which less flat land. Caused the island have many cannels and enough water supply to the natural life and jungle whole year maintain the verdant and freshen of the island. The rich of forest made this island very natural; the deep and virgin for can found every where on Koh Lanta Yai mountain range, the timber forest still perfect at Koh Rok, and the perfect mangrove forest are everywhere.

Koh Lanta Yai itself is the long and thin island, the mountain range start from the north to south with over 30 km. long. The southern part of the island are more high mountain and rugged. The national park office located at the end, here is the good place of bird watching and natural trekking trial with some beautiful beaches.

80% of the archipelago is the sea; it was protected under the Marine Park authority. This cause underwater life and reefs still fresh and unspoiled. There are many snorkeling and diving place around the area. Each place has the different in characteristic which is not the same with other dive spots of this world.

Koh Lanta Yai is the biggest island with 6 km. wide and 40 km. long. There are totally nine beaches from the north through south. Here is the center of traveling to this archipelago with many selective resorts on the east coast. The rest is no resorts except Koh Ngai (Hai) with a few resorts.
 

Koh Lanta Climate & Weather.

 

 

Weather on Koh Lanta is typically that of the tropical monsoon, providing with just two season; summer and rainy. Two monsoons effect to Koh Lanta directly, the west monsoon start around May, this will bring the rain to the island. The sea is rougher and the tide have bigger wave. But it rejuvenates the forest and fills up the reservoir cause the new jungle life born. The maximum raining is during July and August, but it not much as though. The rainfall is just only a few days in a week and a few hours a day and always sunny after rain.

The east monsoon from China will start around October. The wind direction will change to the opposite side heading west; all Koh Lanta's people know it time to start the tourist season. The rain stops and thank for west monsoon that leave the white powder sand bank on the beach and clear all the dirt back to the deep sea. The temperature on Koh Lanta is average 24 to 38 degree Celsius whole year. The sea temperature is around 30 degree Celsius or same as your baht water at home.
